Start With the Unit Column, Not the Grand Total

Every line must carry a unit. Running feet, square feet, or numbers. A wardrobe priced per running foot cannot be compared with one priced per square foot.
India already has a rule book for this. IS 1200 (Part 21) from the Bureau of Indian Standards sets how woodwork and joinery get measured on site.
The same code is strict about detail. Timber thickness is taken to the nearest 2 mm, while lengths and widths are taken to the nearest 0.01 m.
Hinges, channels and bolts are counted as separate numbers unless a line clearly says they are included. So hunt for the phrase "with fittings" in every carpentry item.

The Plywood Line Hides the Biggest Money

Grade Is a Code, Not a Brand Story

IS 303:1989 covers only two general grades of plywood, BWR and MR. Anything sold as "premium ply" with no grade written next to it is just a marketing word.
Here is a fact few buyers know. The 1975 version of that standard allowed as many as 40 classes of plywood. The 1989 revision cut it to two.
MR uses urea formaldehyde glue and suits dry bedrooms. BWR uses phenolic glue. IS 710 marine grade is the one meant for kitchens and wet zones.

Check the Stamp, Not the Invoice

A certified sheet carries the ISI mark, the IS number, the grade, and a licence number on its visible edge. An unmarked sheet proves nothing at all.
Swapping BWR for MR at delivery is the easiest quiet saving a vendor can make. Catch it at the gate, not after the carcasses are already built.

So Why Does the Cheaper Quote Look Cleaner?

Short files are usually short on scope. Fewer lines mean fewer promises. Loose furniture, electrical shifting, and false ceilings often return later as a change order.

Edge banding thickness matters more than it sounds. A 2 mm band survives daily use. A 0.45 mm band lifts at corners inside two humid summers.

The Line That Settles Every Argument

The preamble is the part almost nobody reads. It states the method of measurement used, which decides what each rate already includes. Writing for FIDIC, the International Federation of Consulting Engineers, D. Atkinson explains that the work inside an item is "defined in detail by the rules in the Method of Measurement." That one line explains why two honest firms can price the same flat ₹8 lakh apart.

How Do You Compare Two Files Fairly?

Paste both into one sheet and match line to line. An item present in one file and missing in the other is your real gap, not the total.
